One evening during Lockdown, I had lit a few candles after cleaning the house. Aaliyah had surprised me by entering the room a few minutes later and seemed intrigued by the candle. We sat down together and spoke about the origin, nature of candles and smelt the different types. We bonded, which was amazing since the recent problems made it feel as though she was becoming distant from me. Little did I realise, the constant flicker of the flame and aura that packed the room were the beginning of her journey towards finding the warmth and security she had long forgotten.

As Aaliyah was walking out the room for bed, she said: “Abba (dad), I love the smell of candles. It makes me feel happy”. That’s when I realised how vital a scent can be, and how it can have a positive effect on a person’s mood. Mental health and a person’s well being is crucial in everyone’s life. There are many different ways in getting help. As well as therapy, exercising, learning new skills and love and support of others; the ability to trigger positive memories is crucial, so picking the right fragrance will aid you to your road to recovery. This is why we chose to create our candles and wax melts and this is what will help inspire others – the way Aaliyah did for me.
